What to Expect - The Naturopathic Process

Before the first visit – The Health History Intake Form can be downloaded directly from this site, or if you prefer it will be sent to you directly by email. As this form is quite detailed, please set aside some time to fill it out in the days approaching your appointment. If you have had recent blood work or imaging tests done, it is helpful to bring in a copy of the results.

First visit (60 - 90 minutes) – Please bring your intake forms, consent forms and copies of any recent blood work or imaging tests. The goal of the first appointment is to get a good idea of your medical history and current health concerns and to discuss the goals and expectations of naturopathic treatment. A complaint-oriented physical exam may be performed at this time. You will receive some treatment recommendations on your first visit.

Second visit (30 - 60 minutes) – Generally scheduled two to three weeks later, the second visit includes a physical exam and answers any questions that have come up from the first visit. Once the medical history and physical exam have been completed, we will establish a treatment plan that contains short and long term goals for your health.

Return visits (30 - 60 minutes) – The time between return appointments depends on the severity of the condition and the therapies used. For example acupuncture may be done once or twice a week and biotherapeutic drainage remedies are prescribed every four weeks. Someone on a health maintenance program may come in once every season for a check in.

During the course of your naturopathic treatment, a combination of the following therapies may be used in your personalized treatment plan:

•Clinical Nutrition: Clinical nutrition involves the therapeutic use of food and diet as well as vitamin and mineral supplementation as required for optimal health.

•Botanical (Herbal) Medicine: Botanical medicines are made from plants and taken in the form of teas, tinctures, capsules and topical applications for various therapeutic effects.

•Chinese Medicine: Involves the use of acupuncture, diet modification and Chinese herbal formulations to create balance and achieve health. Acupuncture works by addressing individual health at all levels of the body, mind, heart and spirit. The goal being to help a person move back into harmony with themselves, their emotions and their life as a whole. Acupuncture is useful for many different conditions, both acute and chronic.

•Homeopathy: Homeopathy, originating from the 1700s in Europe, uses remedies based on tiny doses of plant, animal and mineral substances to stimulate and heal the body. Homeopathy is a very safe form of medicine that does not interact with other medicinal substances.

•Biotherapeutic Drainage: Biotherapeutic Drainage is a treatment method aimed at supporting the body?s natural routes of elimination and enhancing the cellular function of the organs and tissues within the body. This is a very gentle and deep acting way to rebalance, heal, and restore the body. The remedies are homeopathic preparations in that they contain minute amounts of the actual plant or mineral used, if any at all. The mineral aspect of the remedy is present to aid in the biochemical reactions our bodies employ for detoxification, and the plant aspect leads the mineral to the intended tissue or organ system. The formulas we use are called UNDAs, they are labelled with a number, the name of a mineral, or in accordance with a particular organ they are designed to support. The remedies are safe, non-toxic, will not interfere with other medications, and have a gentle yet deep acting effect.

•Physical Medicine: Physical medicine involves hydrotherapy, massage and spinal manipulation. Hydrotherapy is the use of hot and cold water to stimulate the circulatory and immune systems. Spinal manipulation is used to correct problems of alignment within the spinal column.

•Preventative and Lifestyle Counseling: Preventing future disease is a primary focus of naturopathic medicine. Lifestyle counseling involves helping patients make healthy choices so that they can achieve better health in the present and future.

•Laboratory Testing: Full range of blood, saliva and urine tests; food allergy and sensitivity testing; heavy metal testing; comprehensive stool analysis.
