Prescription Update

Posted 4/09/2010

I have completed my pharmaceutical prescribing course and examination and am now able to write prescriptions.

What this means for you:

•You can now have your current prescriptions refilled when you come in for your appointments. Please note: Naturopathic Doctors have a limited scope, we cannot write scripts for narcotics, tranquilizers or stimulants.

•A prescription may be started and monitored. You can now have a prescribing naturopathic physician who takes time to understand your specific needs and considers your individuality when recommending a medication. NDs are best positioned to prescribe alongside natural therapies as we understand interactions better than any profession - and we come from a conservative and preventative perspective - so we will work to limit the dosage of the drug you may need, and use them when natural therapies have not worked well or well enough. Lab tests may be required to properly monitor progress.

•We can safely help you discontinue a drug (antidepressants, cardiovascular medications etc.) by offering safe alternatives while providing you with a prescription that makes sense (and is cost effective) for your particular withdrawal process.

•All ND written prescriptions are covered in the same manner as those written by a Medical Doctor.

•We can now write prescriptions for bio-identical hormones (except testosterone), dessicated thyroid, and other previously inaccessible natural products that had become prescription only (such as Tryptophan).

Sublingual Immunotherapy Now Available

Posted 5/5/2009

Sublingual Immunotherapy, or SLIT, is a proven, injection-free treatment to address the underlying causes of seasonal and environmental allergies. The therapy desensitizes the immune system to pollens, dander, and other allergens. It has been found to be effective in hayfever, allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis and allergic asthma. It has been found to prevent the development of allergic asthma in children with eczema and allergic rhinitis.

How does it work?
SLIT works in a similar way to traditional allergy shots. A small daily dose of the allergen is given in a sublingual drop form (under the tongue), which gradually reduces your reactivity by training your immune system to no longer react.

An initial scratch test is done to determine which allergens you are reactive to. The first dose of the indicated allergen/s is given in the office. Subsequent daily doses of the allergy drops are taken at home. Retesting after 6 months of treatment will determine whether the drops are still needed.

SLIT can be used during allergy season or done preventatively, beginning 30-60 days prior to pollen season (continuing to the end of the season itself and beyond if indicated).

Types of allergies treated
At this time, we offer treatment for allergies caused by:

•Cats
•Dust mites
•Tree pollens
•Grasses
•Weeds
•Mold

YPSN Naturopathic Health Clinic for Young Families celebrates 2nd Year Anniversary!

Posted 3/15/2009

In partnership with the Young Parents Support Network, and with the support of Dr. Amy Gilchrist, ND and Acacia Integrative Health, Dr. Kristin Schnurr, ND has been providing weekly Naturopathic care to families.

Started as a pilot project in the spring of 2007, the clinic has been a huge success, both in utilization by the target population (we have been fully booked since our inception), and in outcome for patients and their families.

We believe that everyone should have equal access to health care and an equal ability to make personal health care choices regardless of income.
